No great undertaking is ever achieved alone. Emperor Meiji, who presided over Japan’s industrial transformation,
did not bear the burden of rule alone. Alongside the powerful zaibatsu stood a circle of devoted statesmen —
trusted advisors who carried out his will, safeguarded his reputation, steadied the parliament, and guided the
nation from behind the scenes. They were called the genro — elder statesmen who stood at the very foundation of
the new order.
In this expansion to the economic strategy game “Nippon: Zaibatsu,” you will engage directly with the senior
ministers and administrators who shaped the political character of the Meiji era. You will bargain for privileges
and subsidies, advance legislation and educational reforms, and help steer economic growth while managing
social tensions. All in pursuit of a stronger, more sovereign nation… and the greater prosperity of your own zaibatsu.
